The MHF Internship Programme for Tertiary Students
This internship programme was introduced since 2012 to engage and educate young Singaporeans on the Malay heritage in a fun, yet meaningful, way. Apart from writing articles for an online publication or producing online video documentaries about aspects of our cultural heritage that are facing the threat of becoming a dying art due to the fast-paced globalisation and technological advancements, participants also go on a journey of discovery that endears them to our cultural roots and identity. These articles and videos were also featured and published in MHF main website to further extend our outreach.
At the same time, this programme provides a unique opportunity for the participants to come together and celebrate our unique shared heritage, explore our cultural links to the region and beyond, and create new experiences that will add to their individual stories and be passed down as memories.
Dr. Noor Aisha, Head of Department of Malay Studies, NUS, acknowledged that the internship programme helped to sharpen the student’s writing skills. One of our success stories is Annas Mahmud from the pioneer batch of this internship module. Two (2) of his articles were published in the Singapore Memory Portal, which garnered positive feedback. Annas went on to do his Honours in 2014, and he graduated with (Honours) Second Class Upper. He became an Assistant Curator with National Heritage Board, before pursuing his master’s degree at the Department of Malay Studies, NUS. Today, Annas is an Executive Officer at Yayasan MENDAKI.
To date, it has benefited more than 30 students from the National University of Singapore. Your support will enable us to extend this programme to benefit more students.
